What is Telecare?

The Department of Health defines Telecare as: Personal and environmental sensors in the home that enable people to remain safe and independent in their own home for longer. There are now an estimated 1.7 million telecare users in the United Kingdom.

Personal Alarm

The personal alarm is probably the most simple and easy to use of Telecare devices.  The base unit connects to your phone line, it has an emergency call button and two way voice operation.  

pendant.jpgA pendent has an emergency button and can be worn around the neck or wrist.  When any button is pressed you will be able to speak to a professional consultant and they can speak to you.  Any button pressed will allow a signal to be passed to a 24/7 monitoring centre. Trained consultants will answer the alarm call  24/7 and 365 days of the year.  

Don't worry if it’s a false alarm, or you want to speak to someone at anytime as they will be glad to hear that all is well.

Home Monitoring

3Ps Telecare system combines in home monitoring equipment with a professional
monitoring service. 

If you need more specialist help to remain in your home, other monitoring equipment is available. Movement outside normal patterns or events such as floods, gas leaks, bogus callers can be detected and the most appropriate response executed.

The Whole System Demonstrator (WSD) Programme

In January 2012, results of The Whole System Demonstrator (WSD) programme were published following the largest trial of telehealth and telecare in the world.  6191 patients, 238 GP practices across three sites, Newham, Kent and Cornwall were used to look at cost effectiveness, clinical effectiveness, organisational issues, effect on carers and workforce issues. The WSD programme focussed on three conditions, diabetes, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and coronary heart disease.

The findings for the telehealth element show the following; 

  • 15% reduction in A&E visits
  • 20% reduction in emergency admissions
  • 14% reduction in elective admissions
  • 14% reduction in bed days
  • 45% reduction in mortality rates
  • 8% reduction in tariff costs
